Sohey Sugihara, one of the group’s choreographers, says that the key was to make the routine as aggressive as the beat: “I focused on matching the movement dynamics with the sound’s energy while ensuring the choreography expressed the underlying mood of the lyrics.”

Chaotic? Certainly. But maybe that’s what makes it very KATSEYE. A group where everything is in the mix—and nothing about their formation followed precedent. KATSEYE’s six members come from entirely different cultural and geographic backgrounds: Daniela (Cuban/Venezuelan-American, from Atlanta), Lara (Indian, from New York), Manon (Ghanaian-Italian, from Zurich), Megan (Chinese-American, from Honolulu), Sophia (from Manila), and Yoonchae (from Seoul). The origin story goes back to 2023 when HYBE—the powerhouse behind BTS, Seventeen, and LE SSERAFIM—partnered with Geffen Records to launch The Debut: Dream Academy, a global audition project. Over 120,000 hopefuls applied. The competition ran for 12 weeks and aired on Netflix. By the end, only six finalists debuted as KATSEYE. Just one voting round—on the first mission video—pulled in 1.99 million votes from fans across continents. For many, it felt less like a reality show and more like watching the Olympics. Everyone had someone to root for.

Once the group was assembled, fashion quickly beckoned. Coach invited them to the runway show and booked them as campaign models. Fendi and Glossier followed suit. Fendi’s shoot was a standout: photographed by Nadia Lee Cohen and styled by Mel Ottenberg—editor-in-chief of Interview Magazine and Rihanna’s go-to stylist. “When that opportunity came our way, we were so shook because it’s literally Fendi,” Lara recalls.

이들의 시작은 2023년으로 거슬러 올라간다. BTS, 세븐틴, 르세라핌을 탄생시킨 엔터테인먼트 기업 하이브는 유니버셜 뮤직 그룹 산하의 게펜 레코드와 손잡고 글로벌 오디션 프로젝트인 <더 데뷔: 드림 아카데미>를 론칭했다. 전 세계에서 12만 명이 넘는 지원자가 몰렸고, 이 경쟁은 12주간 넷플릭스를 통해 방송되었다. 그리고 마지막까지 살아남은 단 여섯 명만이 캣츠아이로 데뷔했다. 첫 번째 미션 영상 투표에는 무려 199만 표가 몰렸다. 팬들은 올림픽에 출전한 국가 대표 선수를 바라보듯 자국 출신 멤버를 열렬히 응원했다.

다국적 소녀들의 잠재력을 가장 먼저 알아본 것은 패션 브랜드들이었다. 코치는 캣츠아이를 런웨이 쇼에 초대했고, 캠페인 모델로 기용했다. 이어 펜디와 글로시에도 뒤를 이었다. 특히 펜디의 캠페인 비주얼은 기념비적인 순간이었다. 사진은 나디아 리 코헨이, 스타일링은 인터뷰 매거진의 편집장이자 리한나의 스타일리스트로도 유명한 멜 오텐버그가 맡았다. “펜디라는 기회가 왔을 때, 진짜 충격이었어요. 말 그대로 ‘펜디’잖아요.” 라라가 촬영을 회상하며 말했다.

If their first EP was about making a name, the second EP BEAUTIFUL CHAOS, out on June 27, is about building a world. One that sets them apart not just from K-pop groups, but from pop itself. A new kind of idol arc, unbound by genre or geography. Following the release of their second EP, KATSEYE is set to perform at Lollapalooza in Chicago later this summer. “Lollapalooza has been a dream festival of mine to perform at since I was like three, four years old—literally, as long as I can remember,” Lara says. “So the fact that it’s happening . . . we’re just so excited, we can’t wait to put on a show.” Their schedule leaves no room to breathe. KATSEYE will also take the stage at Summer Sonic 2025 in Osaka and Tokyo in August.

Onstage, the group enraptures audiences with razor-sharp precision. Offstage, they’re just six girls waiting for their favorite matcha to return to the café menu.

“I remember in the middle of rehearsal, Manon called Porto’s service center and was like, ‘When are you bringing back the jasmine matcha?’ And two days ago, they are back to the menu and that’s our hot take,” recalls Sophia, the group’s leader, while laughing. She says that the group’s greatest strength is simple: communication. “What forced us into learning how to communicate was learning how we work with each other—and I think that was one of the biggest areas of growth and change.” Performance director Grant Gilmore agrees. “I find that KATSEYE’s strength is their stage presence and chemistry. They’re all strong individuals that naturally know how to harmonize with each other in their performances.” Together, they’re building something bigger than the sum of their parts. 첫 번째 EP 앨범이 캣츠아이라는 이름을 음악 씬에 알리는 데 초점을 맞췄다면, 오는 6월 27일 발매되는 두 번째 EP 앨범 [BEAUTIFUL CHAOS]는 그들만의 고유한 세계관을 구축하는 데 방점을 둔다. 단순히 K팝 그룹들과 차별화되는 것을 넘어서, 팝 음악 자체의 경계를 허무는 시도를 한다. 장르의 제약도, 지역적 한계도 뛰어넘는 새로운 형태의 아이돌 서사를 써 내려가는 것이다. 두 번째 EP 발표 이후, 캣츠아이는 이번 여름 시카고에서 열리는 롤라팔루자 무대에 오른다. “롤라팔루자는 제가 서너 살 때, 기억할 수 있는 한 어렸을 때부터 꿈꿔온 페스티벌이에요.” 라라는 이렇게 말한다. “꿈이 현실이 되었다는 게 너무 신나고, 무대에 오를 날만 기다리고 있어요.” 이어 8월에는 오사카와 도쿄에서 열리는 서머소닉 2025 무대도 예정이며, EP 발매 이후의 스케줄은 벌써부터 가득 차 있다.

캣츠아이는 카메라 앞에서는 매서운 무대 장악력을 선보이지만, 무대 밖에서는 단골 카페의 단종된 말차 메뉴가 다시 나오기를 기다리는 평범한 여섯 소녀들이다. “리허설 도중에 마농이 포르토(Porto’s) 매장에 전화를 걸어서 ‘자스민 말차 언제 다시 들어오나요?’라고 물어보기도 했어요. 그런데 인터뷰하는 지금, 이틀 전부터 다시 판매를 시작했더라고요. 그게 요즘 저희의 뜨거운 이슈예요.”라고 그룹의 리더 소피아는 웃으며 말했다.

그녀는 캣츠아이의 가장 큰 강점은 소통 능력이라고 말한다. “우리가 소통을 배워야만 했던 이유는 결국 함께 일하는 법을 터득하기 위한 거였어요.” 그게 가장 큰 성장과 변화의 지점이었다고 생각해요.” 퍼포먼스 디렉터인 그랜트 길모어 역시 같은 생각이다. “캣츠아이의 강점은 무대 위에서의 존재감과 멤버 간의 케미스트리에 있다고 생각해요. 각자 뚜렷한 개성을 지녔지만, 공연에서는 자연스럽게 하나로 어우러지는 법을 알고 있죠. 여섯 명의 멤버는 캣츠아이라는 이름 아래 단순한 개인의 총합을 넘어서는 시너지를 만들어내고 있다. 모든 것을 ‘날리(Gnarly)’하게 만드는 여섯 멤버들의 이야기가 지금 시작된다.
